To keep lead and copper from household pipes from entering the drinking water supply, many water companies add orthophosphate. Phosphorus (orthophosphate) is a pollutant of concern in many waterbodies. If the water flows to a septic system, it can eventually migrate to waterbodies. If connected to wastewater treatment plants with tertiary treatment, there are extra costs to remove that phosphorus from the wastewater. If it's a wastewater plant without tertiary treatment, the phosphorus flows to the waterbody. A better way to reduce lead and copper leaching must be developed.
