Cultural Diversity

Think cultural and linguistic diversity from the past, present and into the future. The cities in our region have an incredible mix of cultural influence. Starting with the many native american tribes that once called the area home, moving on to our history as part of New Amsterdam. Hurley and New Paltz in particular have impressive Dutch inspired, preserved streets. Then the influx of English, German, Irish, Italian immigrants, all who left their mark on the names, architecture and industry of the area. More recently the establishment of thriving African American neighborhoods, Latino and Caribbean immigrants. All have mixed to form a remarkably unique cultural landscape.

That cultural diversity is furthered by our region's special mix of urban and rural. Our counties offer both - the city life and the small town. That mix is powerful. Having lived in a number of other areas of the country, most notably in Arizona and near Washington, DC, the accessibility and variety of rural and urban centers in the Mid Hudson Valley is something to preserve and cherish. It is not common.
