The Town of New Castle and the City of White Plains both have Take It Or Leave It sheds that allow residents to drop off a range of items (e.g. non-upholstered furniture, kitchenware, toys, bicycles etc.) that are no longer wanted. This removes these items from the solid waste stream and provides free goods of value to interested people in the community. They operate at public works yards and are largely staffed by volunteers. Other municipalities in Westchester have expressed interest in creating similar facilities.
